Now I know that when Samapos;s having his apos;outside timeapos; on the harness and lead that he needs to be supervised. Itapos;s all too easy to get a lead or full body harness snagged on something and a cat to end up in real trouble.
And I do supervise him. I wander apos;round in his wake reading my book (fine days) or carrying the umbrella for him (wet days). But I donapos;t always hold the lead.
Itapos;s three yards long and bright red and itapos;s very useful for finding him when heapos;s sidling under a bush or sneaking around the corner of a building.
So, today I got talking to one of the neighbours and Sam wandered off around the corner of one of the houses in the court and by the time I followed him he was nowhere to be found. I searched and searched through all the gardens, right out to the road (worst case scenario after loosing Gino), and then searched some more. I called him, but unless heapos;s unhappy he never bothers to respond to that.
Eventually I decided that he could only have gone over the fence into the big property that backs onto the five houses on our side of the court. Probably not the tennis court, and by standing on the fence I could see most of the bush area, but probably on the far side of the house. They have a security gate out by the road, but I know the code ... But I donapos;t know the magic code for reassuring the deaf and almost blind dog. Okay. I can take a hint.
I left a message on their answer-phone and they rang when they got home, telling me to come over and look. By the time I got there they had found Sam, with his long lead snagged as I expected, but also right next to their pool.
If I had know they had a pool the dog wouldnapos;t have stopped me. Cats drown in pools, especially when one end of their lead is wedged between two decorative rocks. Luckily Sam had spent his apos;stuckapos; time winding the end of his lead that was closest to his harness around a slim string of lights so hadnapos;t been able to fall into the pool in his efforts to get free. (Acutally he tends to sit and wait when heapos;s stuck. Janeapos;ll be along soon. She always is.)
Four hours by the pool for Sam.
Probably two or three days confined to the house, now, while my nerves recover.
Iapos;ve learned my lesson. I donapos;t suppose for a moment that he has
